503 CANCELLED-Modeling Magmatic Processes Using MELTS

This workshop is aimed at new users of the MELTS family of software tools for calculation of phase equilibria and tracking of trace elements in igneous systems. We will briefly cover the underlying principles of computational thermodynamics; discuss individual MELTS models (e.g. Rhyolite-MELTS, mixed H2O-CO2 fluid); outline currently available user interfaces; and use practical examples to apply them to simple magmatic systems and complex open-system processes (e.g. fractional crystallization, fractional melting, assimilation). Thumb drives with software for MacOS, Windows, and Linux are included as course materials. We encourage participants to bring questions and examples from their own research and teaching.
