519 CANCELLED-Building Mobile Apps for Geoscience.
Mobile applications have benefits across many aspects of the geosciences including outreach, data collection, education, citizen science, and more. With the inherently geospatial nature of most geoscience data, the ability to visualize and interact with those data on mobile devices - placing the user’s location into the context of the data - is quite useful. Skills gained in mobile app development are extremely valuable to early career scientists in academia, industry, and education. In addition, these skills are largely transferable to web development and other programming tasks, further broadening their utility. Popular open source technologies have made the creation of mobile apps for geoscience more accessible than ever before. This course will get participants started with a basic hybrid mobile app (for both iOS and Android) that includes a map using open source JavaScript libraries. The app will request data from a remote repository and display that data on the map.
