526 CANCELLED-Taking Students into the Field on Their Own Time: Design and Assessment of Student Self-Guided Field Experiences Using the Free, NSF-Funded Flyover Country Mobile App.
Field experiences are an integral and attractive part of an education in the geosciences, and considered formative by many students. However, at many institutions class sizes, transportation, and other barriers make field trips difficult to include in geoscience classes, particularly in lowerdivision coursework. In this halfday course we will demonstrate using the free “Flyover Country” app to design selfguided field trips that students can take on their own schedules, while still having expert knowledge in their pockets (or wherever they keep their phones). Participants will get an introduction to the app, then take a selfguided trip as a student. We will then meet to debrief the experience, discuss ways to apply it in the classroom, which student groups it will most benefit, success stories and lessons learned. Participants will go through a handson tutorial on how to add their own content (stops, text, images) to the app database, using a web interface, for use by their own classes and others. We will finish by discussing assessments for student learning and for the efficacy of using the app as a classroom tool.
