522 CANCELLED-Creating Meaningful Experiences in School Settings
The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) is offering a two-part workshop to train geoscientists in how to create and facilitate engaging and interactive geoscience-based educational experiences for students in grades K-12. The first part of the workshop is full of hands-on activities and discussions that introduce participants to core concepts about teaching and learning science. During the second part of the workshop, AGI experts will consult individually with participants to help them create customized, hands-on activities that highlight their work. These sessions are individually scheduled at the end of the first part of the workshop. Throughout the workshop, AGI staff discuss skills that are essential to effectively communicate scientific concepts to students (e.g., motivating learning, asking questions strategically, facilitating scientific inquiry). Participants will also learn strategies to frame their activities and align them with the needs and priorities of students and teachers, which may include incorporating relevant elements of curriculum standards. After completing AGI’s training, participants will understand major themes in STEM education; be able to effectively communicate about their work; develop engaging, hands-on activities; and form meaningful relationships with their communities.
