Geoheritage sites encompass geological areas or features with significant scientific, educational, cultural, and/or aesthetic values. From national parks to private fossil quarries to former mining areas, these locales play a key role in developing scientific and public understanding of Earth history and advancing scientific knowledge about societally important topics. Led by a global geoheritage expert and including presentations, discussions, and a day-long field trip, this course will review fundamental geoheritage concepts and state-of-the art geoconservation methods and explore the potential for harnessing geoheritage themes to preserve geological sites, enhance geoeducation efforts, and boost rural economic development.
