511 An Introduction to Quantitative Topographic Analysis with the Topographic Analysis Kit (TAK) for TopoToolbox
Quantitative analysis of topography is an increasingly fundamental part of geologic investigations. In the past, performing these analyses was a somewhat niche endeavor, both because of the programming and domain knowledge necessary to do so, but also because of the perception that it was only relevant for questions of active tectonics. In the past few years, several independent sets of analysis tools and codes have been developed that make performing topographic analysis easier and, additionally, it has been recognized that topographic analyses, broadly defined, have potential utility and relevance in a wide range of studies. In this short course, you will be introduced to a recently developed set of topographic analysis tools, the Topographic Analysis Kit (TAK) aimed at users with minimal experience in performing topographic analyses. TAK is built on top of TopoToolbox, a large library of topographic analysis functions written in MATLAB. TAK is available as both MATLAB functions and compiled versions that can be run using the free MATLAB Runtime Environment (MRE). We will introduce participants to TAK and work through example data sets using both the compiled and MATLAB versions. Participants should a bring laptop with MATLAB, TAK, and TopoToolbox installed, or the MRE version. Tempe Campus Map Tempe ASU Map Interactive Map
