513 CANCELED Advances in Quantifying Sediment Budgets for River Systems
A sediment budget is an accounting of sediment from source to sink, which includes erosion, deposition, transport, and delivery; our course will focus largely on fluvial systems. Sediment budgets are used to understand natural and anthropogenically altered processes, i.e. landscape evolution, as well as to track sediment as a pollutant or resource. This course will cover sediment-budget theory, applications, and practice. Information will include traditional and novel approaches to constructing a sediment budget, highlighting remote-sensing technologies (Lidar, Structure-from-Motion) and multivariate tracing approaches to assess contributions from various sediment sources (“fingerprinting”). Attendees are highly encouraged to bring a laptop to assist with practical exercises on sediment budgets and the use of the Sediment Source Assessment Tool (Sed_SAT).
