519 Preparing Undergraduates: Data-Rich Introductory Teaching Modules and Connecting Content to Geoscience Careers.
Interested in integrating data-rich teaching into your introductory courses? Want to learn more about mentoring students on geodetic research methods and careers in geoscience? This short course will help you do both. All presented teaching resources are situated in the context of societal importance and include cutting-edge geodetic data sets (ex. GPS, LIDAR, InSAR) and quantitative skill development. Featured modules will be “Surface Process Hazards: Living with Landslides” and “Eyes on the Hydrosphere: Tracking Water Resources” from the GEodesy Tools for Societal Issues project (GETSI; serc.carleton.edu/getsi). Participants will also be coached in mentoring undergraduates from diverse backgrounds on earth-science careers and how to leverage the curricular content to highlight career options in the geosciences. Community college instructors, including adjunct faculty, are encouraged to apply. Participating undergraduate instructors are eligible for a stipend after course completion—$220 for Phoenix-area residents; $520 for those from elsewhere. In addition to registering with GSA, APPLY for the stipend now at https://serc.carleton.edu/getsi/workshops/gsa19/application.html.
