502 Everything You Wanted to Know about Luminescence Geochronology—Mysteries of the “Illuminati” Revealed.

The goal of this workshop is to strengthen the knowledge base of the user community with respect to the technical details of luminescence dating. These topics will be covered: (1) an introduction of the physics behind the luminescence phenomena and the discovery and history of luminescence; (2) unpacking the concept of the dosimetry or dose rate of “bulk samples,” emphasizing how source geology contributes to the rate of luminescence accumulation, why stratigraphy influences dose rate, where the “time” for the technique is derived from, and how the different types of radiation account for the accumulation of luminescence; (3) briefly showing data output and analytics of the equivalent dose with a discussion of the importance of meta data for published results; (4) discussion of the ways to avoid unsuitable or difficult samples for age determination, the best sampling strategies for a number of environmental settings by working through sampling and dating problem sets, case studies (archaeology, paleontology, geology, or special application); and (5) virtual field trips to see sampling-in-action, highlighting where you would sample and why. This short course will be held a few blocks from the Convention Center in the North Room at the Heritage Square and Science Park (https://heritagesquarephx.org/).
