514 3D Printing for Geoscience and Engineering: Emerging Technology in Education, Research, and Communication.

The course is designed to introduce 3D printing and its applications to accommodate a broad range of participant groups from the geoscience and engineering disciplines. It contains four modules that increase in  complexity level toward the end of the course. The first module represents an overview of 3D printing techniques and methods. The second module allows participants to acquire basic skills in CAD modeling of 3D objects. The third module involves virtual lab tours, where participants can take advantage of watching the 3D printing process and learning about experiments with 3D-printed models. The fourth module is aimed at gaining hands-on experience with 3D-printed models manufactured in various materials and discussing specific applications of 3D printing in geomechanics, porous media, and geomorphology. This course can be beneficial for geologists, petrophysicists, stratigraphers, geophysicists, geomorphologists, reservoir and geomechanical engineers, as well as geomodelers. It is also useful for students, postdoctoral fellows, and professors interested in current advances of 3D printing in research and teaching. In addition, managers and stakeholders can learn the application of 3D printing in a technical communication to explain scientific data to non-specialists. No specific skills or prior knowledge of CAD modeling and 3D printing are required, because the course level is foundation.
