516 Medical Geology: The Earth’s Impacts on Human Health
This course will show how geoscientists can help biomedical/public health researchers and policy makers identify the causes of different environmental health issues and play a role in preventing the negative impacts of the natural environment on public health. The course will begin with an overview of principles of epidemiology, toxicology, and geochemistry, based in the biomedical and geosciences that can be used to evaluate exposures to environmental contaminants and the resultant effective doses. Then, using case studies of earth, air, water, and fire, we will illustrate the many ways that the natural environment (geologic materials and geologic processes) both positively and negatively impacts human health. The cost for this course is $40 for professionals and $20 for students.
