526 FULL An Introduction to Stratigraphic Data Analysis in R (SDAR), a Quantitative Toolkit to Analyze Stratigraphic Data.
This short course will be led by John Ortiz from the Colombian Geological Survey. Stratigraphic Columns (SC) are the most useful and common ways to represent the field descriptions (e.g., grain size, lithology, thickness, sedimentary structures, and fossil content) of rock sequences and well logs. Typically these representations are drawn “manually” using vector graphic editors. Now there are various software packages that automatically plots SCs, but there are not versatile open-source tools, and it is very difficult to both store and analyze stratigraphic information. This workshop will provide an introduction to SDAR, an analytical package designed for both plotting and facilitate the analysis of stratigraphic data using the R programming language (https://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/SDAR/vignettes/introduction-to-sdar.html). We will introduce participants to SDAR and work through examples of data sets; SDAR uses simple stratigraphic data and takes advantage of the flexible plotting tools available in R to produce detailed SCs. The main benefits of SDAR are (a) used to generate accurate and complete SC plot including multiple features (e.g., sedimentary structures, samples, fossil content, color, structural data); (b) developed in a free software environment for statistical computing and graphics; and (c) both plotting and analyzing functions can be executed directly on R’s command-line—consequently this feature enables users to integrate SDAR’s functions with several other add-on packages available for R.
