527 Introduction to Drones (sUAS) in the Geosciences.
This short course is designed as a broad introduction for any unexperienced or novice users of small, unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS; aka “drones”) who are either students, faculty, or professionals. The overall objective is to emphasize sUAS applications for hypothesis testing and provide participants with critical information related to logistics, limitations, and qualifications for designing their own experiments and/or collaborating with experienced sUAS pilots. No prior experience with drones is required or expected. Although topics covered may be insufficiently advanced for intermediate- to expert-sUAS users, such users are nevertheless encouraged to participate and potentially share their knowledge and experience during group work. Topics covered will include (i) sUAS hardware & software requirements; (ii) current USA/FAA rules & regulations; (iii) experimental design, acquisition parameters, and data analysis options; and (iv) numerous case studies in state-of-the-art applications that include thermal imaging, hyperspectral imaging, LiDAR, orthomosaic imagery, and structure-from-motion (SfM) techniques. Quantitative applications will be emphasized over video or simple aerial photography. Due to conference limitations, participants will not fly during the course.
