534 CANCELED Stormwater Infiltration in Washington State Using Deep Underground Injection Control Wells.
Deep Class V Underground Injection Control (UIC) wells provide multiple benefits for conveyance and infiltration of treated stormwater runoff in numerous watersheds in the Puget Sound region of Washington State, USA. Deep UIC wells have been incorporated into new development projects at multiple scales, and city/county Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) retrofit projects to filter, attenuate, and infiltrate stormwater runoff. Low-permeability sediments cover large portions of many watersheds in the region, limiting the potential for shallow stormwater infiltration. Deep UIC wells typically access permeable, unsaturated, glaciofluvial or nonglacial fluvial sediments at depth beneath the surficial low-permeability deposits. This course will provide documentation from 25+ years of deep UIC projects in Washington State, providing guidance for subsurface exploration approaches, well design and construction alternatives, flow testing methods and limitations, grain size distribution/flow rate relationships, recommendations for specifications, and operations and maintenance considerations. Groundwater modeling analyses combined with seepage and slope stability simulations will be presented to demonstrate key considerations designed to avoid adverse impacts to steep slopes and adjacent properties. Lessons learned from case history examples will emphasize critical analysis, design, and construction observation activities, and design team/owner communications.
