531 CANCELED Applying Virtual Microscopy to Geoscience.

Virtual microscopy, the use of software to view microscopic specimens, has been used in medical sciences for decades. In this course, geoscientists will learn to apply the technology using MicroPet™, a Windows-based virtual petrographic microscope, customized for working with thin sections. The course introduces virtual microscopy as a technology, distinct from AI-based image analysis. There will be an overview of the scanning process, but the focus will be on the use of a virtual microscope for making basic observations and collecting data. The course will provide examples of applications for teaching and analysis and ample opportunity to use the software under guidance. A copy of MicroPet™ software and a library of virtual thin sections are included in the course fee. Geoscientists with minimal microscope experience can benefit, because MicroPet™ eliminates the challenges of operating an optical microscope. Users can effortlessly view an entire virtual thin section without constant refocusing and relocating. More advanced petrographers can benefit from efficient textural and compositional analyses facilitated by the customizable micro-grid and “stage advance” with a linked database. To improve repeatability, data points and measurements can be reviewed and edited. Documentation tools include seamless graphic displays and photomicrographs. Course requirement: Laptop computer running Windows 7, 8, or 10, preferably with Microsoft Office Excel. Cost: US$100 professionals; $50 students.
