510 Introduction to Seismic Structural Interpretation
The overall goal of this workshop is to promote interaction between industry and academic geologists. This is a mandate of the GSA Academic and Applied Geoscience Committee, on which one of the instructors serves. We wish to provide deeper awareness and understanding of the diversity of roles structural geologists play in the petroleum industry and the science that they pursue. Typically, petroleum structural geologists have access to data uncommon in academia, and the analysis and interpretation of those data lead to new insights into how the physical Earth behaves. The course will introduce students to the fundamentals of seismic interpretation of structural systems in exploration and production. The focus is 2D and 3D interpretation and structural analysis for reduction of uncertainty in imaging and interpretation, building kinematic structural histories for basin analysis, and interpretation of structural heterogeneities at the seismic scale that may impact hydrocarbon entrapment and production. Extensional, contractional, and salt tectonics structural styles will be covered in the course. The scientific process of making observations and obtaining data before interpretation and drawing conclusions is emphasized.
