503 Age-Depth Modeling of Sedimentary Deposits

Chronologies form the backbone of most studies of past environmental change; only when put on a calendar time scale can the timing and spatiotemporal dynamics of sites and events be inferred securely. Different approaches to age-depth modeling of sedimentary deposits can result in different estimates of ages, rates of change, and uncertainties. Although classical linear interpolation appears to reconstruct very precise age-depth models, Bayesian approaches produce more realistic uncertainty estimates. In this workshop, we will cover the basics of dates (e.g., Pb210, C14) and classical and Bayesian age-models, and allow for participants to work on age-depth models for their own sites.
