513 Introduction to the Paleobiology Database

The Paleobiology Database (PBDB) is a non-governmental, non-profit public resource for paleontological data. It has been organized and operated by a multi-institutional, international group of paleontologists. Its purpose is to provide global, collection-based occurrence and taxonomic data for organisms of all geological ages, as well as data services to allow easy access to data for development of analytical tools, visualization software, and applications of all types. PBDB’s broader goal is to encourage and enable data-driven collaborative efforts that address large-scale paleobiological questions. PBDB data has been used in over 1400 research papers, and this number increases almost daily. This workshop will introduce all basic operations of the PBDB, with topics including searching for and browsing data, educational resources, entering data of all types, and downloading and analyzing data. PBDB is also in the process of developing new tools that will be introduced at the workshop. We encourage those who used the PBDB in the past to re-engage with the system at the workshop, and we are also targeting new users of the PBDB, particularly graduate students and early career researchers who could use the PBDB in their research. PBDB is most useful to paleontologists, but all are welcome to attend. Cost is US$100 professionals; free for students.
