527 Volcanic Crisis Awareness
This is a standardized FEMA class offered through NDPTC, combining geoscience, social science (risk perception and communication), emergency management, and emergency response. The course is designed to enhance the abilities of participants to support their organizations’ preparedness and response efforts for future volcanic crises. Participants learn how organizational preparedness and community-level planning support mitigation of volcanic hazards, including the complex factors that influence volcanic crises. Classes are tailored to regional volcanic hazard profiles; this likely will focus on Cascade-type volcanism but may be adapted based on participant profile. Classes are interdisciplinary; most participants will come from state and local government agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), higher education, private and public local/regional planners, policy makers, responders, emergency managers, healthcare providers, the general public, etc. The goal of this course is to provide participants with an understanding of (1) processes, effects, and complexity of volcanic hazards; (2) current monitoring and hazard assessment tools; (3) volcano warning and dissemination systems and methods; and (4) community response to eruption and volcanic crises. In addition to your registration with GSA, you will need to create a National Disaster Preparedness Training Center NDPTC profile and complete a course pre-test. Additional guidance will be provided closer to the delivery date. Per federal law, foreign nationals wishing to attend FEMA-funded training must complete and submit a FEMA application requesting approval for attendance. The request will outline the participant’s professional relationship with the state or local jurisdiction and the anticipated value the training will provide for the participant in support of that jurisdiction. This application must be completed at least 30 days prior to the training date. Please contact Amanda Bates at batesa@hawaii.edu for assistance with this process.
