504 Introduction to Geostatistical Modeling of Geochemical Data

Geologists use the spatially distributed point data sets for characterizing a site for geological characterization of data for mineral exploration or environmental applications. Often statistical analyses are used in such studies. Various statistical parameters and contours of various variables are used for spatial modeling. The contouring involves “interpolation.” The geostatistical techniques are better in many ways for generating spatial models in two- or three-dimensional space. One of the well-known advantages of the geostatistical techniques is the estimates of accuracy and errors associated with the models. In this short course, discussions will start with basic statistical analyses of a given set of data used as an example. The spatial data analyses topics will include simple non-geostatistical techniques such as inverse distance power and linear geostatistical interpolation technique, such as ordinary kriging. Using example data set and a freely available software tool, the instructor will explain the spatial data analyses techniques and processes. A couple of hands-on exercises will be used for familiarizing the participants with key concepts. Cost is US$50 professionals; US$25 students.
