535 CANCELED: Using Geophysics to Address Societally Relevant, Urban and Environmental Real-World Questions in Introductory-Level Geoscience Courses

The IGUaNA project, Introducing Geophysics for Urban and Near-surface Applications, has developed a set of curricular modules that feature the applications of shallow geophysical techniques to societally relevant, real-world problems. These modules are designed to attract a more diverse population of students to the geosciences by showcasing how geoscience can be used to address near-to-home urban, environmental, engineering, and forensic questions and problems that students care about. In addition, these modules support the development of students’ quantitative and critical thinking skills by providing meaningful opportunities to apply those skills using authentic datasets. Topics include examining salt marsh pollution and restoration, identifying historical burial grounds and urban infrastructure, and urban renewal planning. The geophysical techniques used include electrical resistivity, GPR, and seismic refraction. In this workshop, instructors will lead participants through curricular materials, with time to work through some of the activities. Participants will discuss how these modules can be integrated into the introductory geoscience-related courses they teach. Members of the module author team will be available to answer questions about the modules, classroom implementation, or the underpinning geophysics. Participants will leave the workshop prepared to use IGUaNA materials in their teaching.
