524 CANCELED: Hydrogeological Layered Modeling—Use of Data, How to Build, and How to Use Output for Informed Decision Making
Geologic models in different aspects are representations of geo-modelers’ “best estimates” of the geologic layers below us. Depending on the purpose of the models, the precision can be extremely important, especially in cases where calculations and decisions based on the model results are used for planning and decision making (e.g., land use, groundwater abstraction, or areas suitable for recharge of surface water). Therefore, the model results can have huge economical and practical impact for landowners, etc. In Denmark, an extensive groundwater mapping campaign has been going on for more than 20 years. The campaign has resulted in the development of several hundred geologic and hydrostratigraphic models, many of them used for hydrologic modeling. The government, municipalities, research institutes, and consultants have been working in a joint effort in the process of gathering geological information to geologic- and hydrologic modeling. This led to the development of several new field- and desktop methods, optimization of older ones, new and optimized workflows, development of new software, etc. This course focuses on the process and workflow of creating a 3D hydrogeologic layered model. We will discuss considerations in the modeling process, using different kinds of “direct” data (e.g., wells and geophysics) and “indirect” data (the general geological understanding of the geology in an area). Participants will learn through a combination of presentations and “hands on” work in the GeoScene3D software. In addition, we will look into some of the considerations the geologist goes through on method resolution and target sensitivity (e.g., when using Airborne Geophysical data in hydrogeological modeling). No previous experience with 3D geological modeling, the GeoScene3D software, or geophysical data is required for this course. Participants must bring their own Windows PC laptop. Training data, case projects, and the GeoScene3D software will be provided before the course, with a complimentary 6-month license.
