506 CANCELED: Geological Modeling and Uncertainties Using Multiple Point Statistics
The importance of handling uncertainty of data and being able to present the ambiguity of geo models of any kind have got increased attention the last couple of years. In the same way as it is important for a geo modeler to understand the uncertainty and limitations of data to make an adequate geo model, it is important for a decision maker to understand the uncertainty and limitations of a geo model to perform adequate and qualified decisions. Whether the geo model is made to manage infrastructure projects or nature resources like oil, gas, or groundwater, being able to understand the uncertainty and limitations of the model potentially have great economic value. Multiple Point Statistics (MPS) is a methodology allowing us to present and understand the uncertainty and ambiguity of a geo model and will be the focus of this course. We will work with the MPS approach on a 3D (hydro)geological model and see how probabilistic integration of borehole data, AEM data, and geological knowledge allow for a suite of (hydro)geologically realistic models to be generated instead of just one. In this probabilistic framework, more informative decisions can be made. The course will be a combination of short lectures and exercises, and at the end of the day the participants will have touched base with the main principles behind making a training image, which consideration to make when extracting information from AEM and borehole data, how to run MPS simulations, and how to analyze the results. For the exercises in the course, we will use the GeoScene3D software. To be able to carry out the exercises, the course participants will get free access to the software during the course. The participants are required to bring their own windows-based laptops with a reasonable graphics card; see more on https://www.geoscene3d.com.
