516 CANCELED: Digital Petrography: Bringing Petrologic Imaging into the Modern Era with Automation, Robotics, Image Analysis, and AI

Petrography is fundamental to microstructural/microanalytical approaches in the geosciences. Conventional petrographic light microscopy and adjunct electron microbeam techniques yield detailed information about rock formation, history, and associated geological processes not available through bulk analysis. Recent developments allow for automated acquisition of large petrographic datasets that rival and even surpass physical thin sections in utility. Investigation of such datasets with current data science techniques, image processing and analysis, and AI and machine learning allow for analysis and assessment in ways not previously possible. This short course describes the current state of the art in this field and practical experiences in data acquisition, handling, and analysis.
