521 CANCELED: Open & FAIR Mineral Data: Best Practices for Sharing and Reusing Observations from the Field and Lab
This course invites geoscientists who generate and use mineral data of terrestrial and planetary materials in reviewing and augmenting existing best practices for mineral data dissemination and citation. The course will have presentations on the existing landscape of data resources such as the RRUFF Project, The Open Data Repository, MinDat, EarthChem, AstroMat, MetBase, and SESAR, as well as how to contribute datasets to existing databases. There will be targeted discussions regarding the metadata, terminology, and identifiers for data, samples, and other entities that are needed to make mineralogical data Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable, as well as ways to provide access to the data. We will explore requirements and opportunities for networking the different data resources into a more comprehensive cyberinfrastructure that supports next-generation, data-driven mineralogy. We encourage participants to bring their own datasets as examples and highly encourage participation of early-career researchers.
