505 Hybrid Course: Innovations in 3-D Geology
This workshop is for those constructing 3-D geological maps and numerical models for geoscience applications, and for those accessing and communicating this information via interactive online platforms. Understanding, characterizing, and mapping Earth’s complex subsurface has reemerged as central to the core mission of the geosciences. The energy transition is forcing subsurface exploration for CO2 and geothermal potential, as well as pore space possibilities for hydrogen and compressed air. That same subsurface focus is an intense national security and green technology priority to discover and delineate new critical and strategic minerals. In response to climate change, there have been increasing urban pressures to address difficult decisions for land-use planning, natural hazard mitigation, environmental protection, and groundwater resource evaluations/protection strategies. This course will not focus on introductory concepts, but we encourage anyone interested in learning more about the application of 3-D mapping/modeling to attend online or in person. We will discuss the importance of 3-D maps and models, including: (1) optimizing methods for model construction/validation; (2) managing large diverse data of variable quality (required for 3-D geology); (3) ensuring the interoperability of geologic maps/data (4) developing interactive online visualization tools; and (5) lessons learned, which will facilitate impactful interaction between geological mappers, hydrogeologists, engineering geologists, engineers, and other scientists. The workshop is designed to share new ideas and findings with scientists from around the globe.
