501 Engineering Geological Investigations for Pumped Storage Hydro Projects
Pumped storage hydro projects (PSHPs) are a new method of energy storage with lesser environmental impact than traditional hydropower. PSHPs are different to conventional hydropower projects. There are two reservoirs at different levels at a close distance, and multiple pressure shafts deliver water from upper reservoir to lower reservoir through a power station using reversible turbines to generate electricity and pump water. The dam sites used for PSHPs are also divergent from conventional river valley dams. Presence of sound rock at all the important project features is immensely beneficial. This means that sound rock must be found for multiple pressure shafts of horizontal, inclined, and/or vertical configuration. The geological investigations for this unique project configuration are important because the success of the project construction and its safe operation is heavily dependent on their outcome. This course will take you through the entire spectrum of geological, geotechnical, and construction material investigations required to prepare a dependable Feasibility or Detailed Project Report (DPR).
