515 Geochemical Modeling through The Water-Organic-Rock-Microbe Portal

The Water-Organic-Rock-Microbe (WORM) Portal offers free, online, open-source Python tools for modeling geochemical processes driven by aqueous solutions throughout Earth’s crust. In this workshop, participants will gain hands-on experience running and modifying Jupyter notebooks for evaluating aqueous speciation of solutes, understanding consequences of fluid mixing and water-rock reactions, and quantifying sources of chemical energy used by microbes. The WORM Portal provides interactive plots of results, easily allows modifications of model parameters to encourage exploration, and is adaptable to large databases of water, rock, and organic compositional data. The course will include brief reviews of underlying thermodynamic principles and conceptual foundations of computational models. Advanced topics will include expanding underlying thermodynamic data and customizing databases in pressure and temperature to individual research interests. Participants will be launched on paths to gain new geochemical modeling skills needed to understand processes where water meets geology and biology, as well as conditions disrupted by human activities.
