Eligibility

Applicants must meet all the following criteria:

  • Have obtained their terminal degree in geosciences or allied disciplines before 30 June 2018.
  • Have demonstrated strong technical proficiency and growing independence and visible leadership roles, with well-established research programs, clear broader societal impact, and a rising career trajectory in science, education, or other related professional fields.
  • Be under 50 years of age by 31 December 2026.
  • Reside in North America (Canada, United States, or Mexico).

Application Requirements

  • Only complete applications submitted by the deadline will be considered.
  • Applicants can either self-nominate or be nominated by someone else.
  • Personal Statement of Qualification (self-nomination) or Letter of Nomination (nomination by a colleague). Maximum of two pages. This letter needs to address how this scientist meets each of these three criteria: scientific excellence, service to the community, and mentorship, with special focus on impact.
  • Letter of support (one page maximum).
  • Resume (maximum of five pages, can also include links to a personal webpage or LinkedIn profile).
  • Applicants need to be GSA, GAC, or SGM members to apply.

Selection Criteria

Applications are evaluated based on three criteria, with special focus on impact:

  • Scientific excellence.
  • Service to the national and international geosciences community.
  • Mentorship of students, colleagues, and peers.

  • Award recipients will be recognized during GSA Connects 2026 and subsequent meetings of GSA, GAC, and SGM.
