Abstract

A three-dimensional numerical model was developed to simulate ground-water flow and ground water/surface water interactions in the glacial outwash valley of the West Branch of the Carrabassett River near Kingfield, Maine. The purpose of the model is to provide a tool to effectively manage ground-water withdrawals from four boreholes that are a source for bottled spring water. The model was developed using the extensive data collected at the site including stratigraphy, ground-water levels, aquifer testing, stream gaging, spring flow measurements and geologic mapping. Model calibration will be done using parameter estimation techniques that utilize monthly observations of ground-water levels, precipitation, stream flow and spring flow.
