Abstract

PCBs (Polychlorinated Biphenyls) are one of the most irremediable contaminants in soil and water systems. Nano Zero Valent Iron (NZVI) was used for remediation of PCBs in a pilot study performed in central Bohemia (Czech Republic), at a site located in the former tar-macadam plant. The bedrock consists of fractured granodiorite within the target zone as shown by down-hole logging and tracer testing. The general effectiveness of intended in-situ chemical reduction for particular site conditions was determined during laboratory batch tests. Additionally, a reactive solution was injected into four wells surrounding a pumping well at the pilot site. Monitoring of all parameters revealed clear evidence of reductive conditions in the target zone and a long-term decrease in PCB concentration in application wells and short-term decrease in the pumping well. Although the initial results are promising, the additional more detailed exploration of the bedrock and additional in situ tests of the pilot study are recommended.
