Abstract

A recent hydrogeologic investigation, completed to support lateral expansion of an existing solid waste landfill site, provided an opportunity for integrated presentation of the study’s findings relative to traditional investigative methods (literature review, fracture-trace analysis, and field mapping of bedrock lithology and structure). These findings were supplemented by geophysical logging of bedrock boreholes, which included optical and acoustical televiewer, acoustic caliper, fluid temperature and resistivity, and heat pulse flowmeter (HPFM) methods. The combined findings provided a basis for a comprehensive evaluation of site bedrock conditions, including groundwater flow, bedrock permeability, and rock stability. Integration of these findings into a conceptual model describing bedrock hydrogeologic conditions at the site provided a basis for the engineering design and solid waste permitting of the proposed expansion area.
