Abstract

With large increases in population and changes in agricultural practices in recent history, pollutants are threatening groundwater quality. The objective of this research is to provide insight to minimize future contamination of aquifers. We have developed a computational model for contamination transport from a point source within an aquifer contained in fractured bedrock. The simulations use a finite difference scheme to solve the advection-dispersion equation for an arbitrary number of non-interacting contaminates within the groundwater system. These models are used to predict contamination in monitoring wells at the University of Northern Iowa and have applications in both research and undergraduate instruction.
