Abstract

Many undergraduate research students are still unsure on what careers to follow or how to take the next step towards those careers. Among the people they look to for advice on these matters are their research mentors. Thus mentors should be able to help guide students through the process of discerning a future career, finding a job, as well as choosing and applying for graduate school. This can be a daunting task for people whose background is largely academic. Fortunately there are both strategies and resources that can help with this task. This talk reviews some of the strategies and resources have been collected in the “Mentoring for Transitions” page of the CUR/SERC website Undergraduate Research as Teaching Practice”: http://serc.carleton.edu/NAGTWorkshops/undergraduate_research/index.html

These include information about potential careers and job openings, hints on the job search, strategies for finding, applying to and choosing graduate schools and suggestions on how to help students connect with the wider Geosciences community.
