Abstract

Petrographic and petrophysical analysis of selected samples obtained from the Wasielewski #1 well of the Cayuga County, central New York revealed four tidally-influenced lithofacies. These lithofacies are as follows: 1) quartzose sandstone; 2) dolomitic limestone; 3) oolitic limestone; and 4) fossilferous limestone.

A diagenetic sequence of dolomitization, dedolmitization, silicification, and stylolitization was detected using Nuclide Luminoscope.

Petrophysical parameters and reservoir quality were determined using mercury prosimetric technique. Selected samples were injected with mercury at a high pressure up to 25, 000 psi (pounds per square inch). This high pressure forces mercury to penetrate pores with diameters that range from 900 to 0.04 microns. The pore system of the studied samples was classified by using a high resolution petrographic microscope.

Diagenetic processes have affected the petrophysical parameters including porosity, permeability, fluid saturation, and recovery efficiency.
