Abstract
Preliminary Theriak-Domino models suggest minimum pressures of 0.85 GPa at 750 – 800C, although many studies attribute similar occurrences of rutile needles in garnet to open system precipitation at considerably higher P and/or T. We plan to further assess temperature using Zr in rutile thermometry. The formation of plagioclase within garnet rims is consistent with isothermal decompression. P-T estimates with TWQ, using the composition of low-Ca garnet, adjacent plagioclase rims on quartz and matrix biotite yield 0.55 GPa at 600C. The 475 – 480 Ma age of monazite inclusions in garnet from this sample (Pyle et al., 2006) is identical to the age of magmatic zircon in the nearby Wilmington Complex arc. This suggests that this metamorphism is related to arc formation.
