Abstract

We have experimented with using Google Glass to support collaborations between instructors and/or students in field classes and field mapping. In an experiment, one of us played the role of an agile instructor wearing Google Glass at the outcrop and the other played the role of sessile student in a synchronous field class, viewing the instructor’s Glass video in real time (by "sessile" we mean either unable or unavailable to be present at the otucrop due to mobile, time, financial, cultural, or other constraints. Since this experiment, Google have suspended live streaming from Glass through a Google Hangout. We are exploring other available software options, and other wearable computer hardware exists (e.g. GoPro, Geonaute, Oculus Rift.) However, live streaming remains a challenge due to field connectivity and bandwidth issues.

Hardware, software, and synchronous videos will be demonstrated in this hands-on digital poster presentation. We encourage discussion with and among other users of wearable technologies in field and other pedagogic environments.
