Abstract
A refined conceptual and numerical groundwater flow model is being developed for the karstic Edwards Aquifer in central Texas. Improved understanding of the Edwards Aquifer, its extent, boundary conditions, recharge, and internal hydraulics warrants development of this new conceptualization and model. The refined conceptualization is predicated on an enhanced hydrostratigraphic framework model. Expansion of the current model to include the contributing zone sets it apart from existing models. This enhancement allows for more inclusive incorporation of recharge as it occurs in the contributing zone rather than amassing all upland recharge into the recharge zone and sacrificing the spatial and temporal distribution detail of precipitation that provides information key to discerning lag times and modulation of recharge as it flows through the karstic Edwards Aquifer. Consequential enhancements to the conceptual model of the Edwards Aquifer and the ability of the model to accommodate recharge that occurs in the contributing zone are discussed in the presentation.
