Abstract

The voluminous intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks of a Large Igneous Province (LIP) produce diagnostic anomalies in the lithospheric magnetic field of the Earth. The deep crustal expression of LIPs is well mapped by closed pseudogravity highs (pseudogravity is a mathematical transformation of magnetic anomalies that highlights deeper and thicker sources). The shallow crustal expression of LIPs is well represented by a distinctive high amplitude “chaotic” set of magnetic highs and lows. Magnetically well studied LIPs include the High Arctic LIP, the Columbia Plateau, the Siberian Traps, the North Atlantic Igneous Province, and the Kerguelen Plateau. A new global magnetic data compilation, EMAG2 version 3, includes new processing of all marine survey trackline data from NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (formerly the National Geophysical Data Center) data archives. Availability of this new compilation allows us to conduct a global survey of LIP regional magnetic expression.
