Abstract

InSAR (Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar) is a geodetic technique commonly used to map ground deformation from radar images. The technique results in an interferogram, or deformation map, which is very visual but difficult to interpret for the untrained eye. To facilitate understanding of InSAR, we designed a wall-sized infographic to visually describe how the technique works and to showcase the many applications of InSAR in the geosciences. The poster was designed by a UNAVCO Student Internship Program (USIP) intern with a background in InSAR analysis and an interest in outreach, working for the UNAVCO Education and Community Engagement program. The infographic describes microwave remote sensing techniques, how to read an interferogram, and how to interpret the science behind the results. Various interferograms are showcased to illustrate the many environmental, geophysical, and geological applications. This poster helps educate UNAVCO visitors on InSAR and UNAVCO’s on-going work with SAR data collection and storage. This presentation will feature both the infographic discussed here and assessment of the process of creating an educational infographic.
