Abstract

The field of Earth Science has long developed innovative and creative ways in communicating science via extensive outreach efforts. As methods of research and technology have grown in scope, so has the ways in which science is conveyed. Various demographics are now easily accessible, due to advances in technology. Much of this is attributed to the interconnecting of creative art forms and science. From video production and image visualization of one’s research, to musical interpretation. These methods of communicating science have established creative ways in developing interest in the field of Earth Science, while also accessing untapped potential. The authors have a background that resonates very closely with disadvantaged demographics, and have used this as a mechanism to connect and communicate science with the youth that identify with the hip-hop community. The authors grew up in a violent area (Richmond, California), and found music as an escape. From production, to writing verses, and creating original hip-hop pieces; a unique form of self-expression and inspiration has developed. One of the authors found that science exhibits these aforementioned traits as well. Influences found from music, complimented with research in Earth Science, has yield the creation of Flows in Hydrogeology. Flows in Hydrogeology is an original hip-hop piece created by the authors. The title itself demonstrates the play on words that is prevalent in the hip-hop community. It can be inferred as actual fluid flow in porous media, or as one’s ability to craft rhyming lyrics in music, on the subject of Hydrogeology. Although the field of Earth Science contributes a significant influence on inspiring the creation of Flows in Hydrogeology, much inspiration is derived from the youth, and advances made in research and academics by one of the authors. Flows in Hydrogeology aims to convey science in the form of creative music, while simultaneously bridging diversity with Earth Science.
