Abstract

Jenny Lake is situated along the eastern front of the Teton Range, with the Teton normal fault running underneath the western edge of the lake. This paper aims to provide a detailed sedimentary history of the Jenny Lake basin using seismic refection data combined with multiple sediment cores recovered from Jenny Lake with the goal of reconstructing the glacial and tectonic history of the Teton Range. Seismic reflection data was collected along ten different trackways using a CHIRP sonar device in June of 2016. Five sediment cores were retrieved from various locations around the lake and were measured for P-wave velocity, loss on ignition, bulk density, and magnetic susceptibility. The sediment stratigraphy of the lake shows a basal unit of glacial till and an upper non-glacial unit which are both disrupted by disturbance deposits attributed to landslide deposits or sub-lacustrine slope failures. The stratigraphic record of Jenny Lake sediments is discussed in conjunction with prior sedimentary and geochemical studies performed on Jenny Lake and other lakes within the Grand Teton area.
