Abstract

Lithoprobe (1984 to 2005) produced a crustal east-west transect across Canada that was greater than 6000 km deep. One thousand geoscientists produced approximately 1500 scientific publications associated with Lithoprobe. The transportable broadband seismometer array associated with EarthScope (2004 to ~2018) is now capable of defining discontinuities within the mantle and creating movies of earthquake waves as they propagate across the Earth's surface. The Canadian Cordillera Array (CCArray) is a new initiative intended to combine the geoscience approach of Lithoprobe with the technological and scientific advances of EarthScope in order to holistically examine entire Earth Systems from the magnetosphere through to the deep mantle. This project will explore possibilities of using EarthScope seismic data to characterize earthquakes in order to design possible education-outreach citizen science research projects for the future CCArray research initiative.
