Abstract

The South to North Water Diversion Project (SNWDP) can greatly alleviate water shortage in the central and northern China. The middle route of SNWDP is built to supply water for Henan province, Hebei province, Beijing and Tianjin. It transfers 9.5 billion m3 annually, which is mainly used for industry and resident. The middle route of SNWDP has transferred more than 20 billion m3 of water to Beijing from December 12, 2014 to now. Some South to North Water were recharged into the aquifer of Mihuaishun area, Beijing. In order to figure out the influence of artificial recharge by the South to North Water on aquifer of Mihuaishun area, level and quality of groundwater have been monitored and evaluated. Meanwhile, infiltration capacity and influence range have been estimated. The results show that the groundwater level generally increased with an average of 6m in the beneficiary area and the ratio of infiltration capacity and transferred water volume can reach more than 95%. At the same time, groundwater qualities improved greatly, especially Total Hardness and NH3-N. Therefore, the SNWDP is beneficial to increase the reserve of groundwater resources, to improve groundwater quality, and to ensure the safety of water supply.
