Abstract

Unconventional field development and horizontal well performance analysis often encompass multiple disciplines and large data sets. When 3D seismic volumes are not available, geologists and engineers can determine key reservoir performance drivers and factors that affect operational efficiency by integrating stratigraphic, petrophysical, drilling, completion, and production data into a 3D geologic model. These data sets were integrated into Petrel© software in order to highlight characteristics that affect operations and production in a Marcellus Formation horizontal well field in western West Virginia. A 3D geocellular model was created for the field from horizontal and vertical well data and petrophysical properties, such as gamma and density, were normalized and geostatistically distributed throughout the model with a Guassian random function simulation. Drilling and completion parameters - including rate of penetration, treating pressure, and proppant delivered - were also distributed throughout the model. Model results suggest that geologic, completion, and production trends coincide, as treating pressure increases and production decreases with increasing geologic structural complexity. Also, drilling and completion trends vary among different stratigraphic sequences and systems tracts within the Marcellus, but production does not appear to be affected by well placement within the formation stratigraphy. Bulk density affects rate of penetration during drilling operations, but there is no clear correlation between gross formation rock properties and completion trends. By integrating and analyzing geology, engineering, and production data in a geologic model, we can: 1) predict drilling, completion, and production trends based on geologic structure and the stratigraphic placement of the wellbore, 2) optimize efficiency in the planning and operational phases, and 3) provide real-time recommendations during drilling and completion operations.
