Abstract

Increasing numbers of researchers are using physical experiments to study processes that create landforms such as channels, deltas, and dunes. These experiments often require unique designs that generate massive datasets and depend on special methods for data handling. Designing new laboratory methodologies can be a long and frustrating process, especially if learning on one’s own, or relying on the descriptions in published literature. In addition, the landscape for experimental methods and data is changing quickly, with new collaboration platforms and new expectations for sharing the data behind journal publications. An NSF-funded EarthCube Research Coordination Network, the Sediment Experimentalist Network (SEN) has been working to help researchers navigate this new landscape and improve the efficiency and transparency of laboratory geomorphic and sedimentary research. Participation in SEN is open to anyone interested in our topics and activities. Here we highlight the breadth of scientific and technical activity that has been a part of the Sediment Experimentalist Network.
