Abstract

JMARS is a Java based GIS tool that allows users to select from a variety of planetary data sets and imagery and is suitable for all levels of research. Imagery and data sets are available for all planets and select dwarf planets and asteroids. As has been confirmed within the past decade or so, ancient Mars had an environment suitable for liquid water at the surface, as is evident by multiple planetary wide fluvial features. One such location is Madler impact crater, a 133-km diameter impact crater located 660-km southwest of Schiaparelli impact crater. Along the western rim of the crater, an ancient stream channel cuts through the outer rim and discharged onto an open plane. Terrain characteristics and channel morphology can reveal fluvial dynamics and can indicate what dominate controls influenced stream flow. To demonstrate the versatility and power that JMARS offers, I have surveyed and presented several physical aspects of this ancient stream channel and impact crater.
