Abstract

Several models are in existence for the prediction of sand failure/production in reservoir rocks; however, none of these models consider the deleterious effects of oilfield chemicals that are used routinely for one treatment or the other in oil and gas wells. In this work, the weakening effect of oilfield chemicals on sand failure and production arising from the interaction between the oilfield chemicals and the reservoir rocks is modelled numerically. Brinkman equation, transport of diluted species in porous media and Domain ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and DAEs physics interfaces in COMSOL Multiphysics software were used to solve for fluid flow, mass transport and chemical reaction in porous media. The results establish the fundamental mechanisms involved in the oilfield chemical-reservoir rock interaction and show that dissolution leads to increase in porosity; whilst precipitation causes reduction of porosity. It is shown that dissolution and precipitation of minerals are a function of the change in volume fraction of the minerals and porosity.

Key words: Dissolution, precipitation, porosity, volume fraction.
