Abstract

Tianchi area in Changbai Mountain is a well-known tourist attraction. It is also a potential volcano with a high possibility of eruption. Volcanic activities could result in seismicity, which in turn, creates slope instabilities and landslide hazards. This study focuses on exploring and predicting the possibility of induced landslide hazard created by volcanic activities. We have determined the potential volcanic seismic focal areas and possible maximum magnitude according to the crustal stress state, active faults distribution, and historical volcanic activity energy. Then, we use the parameter of Arias intensity to measure earthquake intensity. Finally, we present usage of Newmark’s physical balance model in calculating the permanent displacement influenced by the seismic acceleration using combinations of geological information with topographic data. We mapped three areas with low, moderate and high landslide hazard based on the probability of regional earthquake induced landslide hazards using empirical relations.

Key words: potential volcanic earthquake; Changbai Mountain; landslide; Arias intensity; Newmark model
