Abstract

Upon arriving at a field site, a geologist must first be able to understand the context of the surrounding area in order to most efficiently and accurately study the site. An easily accessible mobile application that compiles geologic information and can be used offline could significantly expedite this process and be a boon to geologists, both professional and amateur. The Flyover Country mobile app, originally developed for geoscience outreach, aims to be this tool. Flyover Country offers information on field trip guides, bedrock maps, landscape features, fossils, lake core samples, and ocean core samples, and is continuously expanding the scope of information offered by adding additional resources and new data, for both researchers and the general public, including international users. This project contributes to this initiative by adding economic, environmental, and subsurface lithological data to the app. These datasets derive from the Macrostrat database (Macrostrat.org), which provides subsurface information via generalized stratigraphic columns. In order to access the information, a request to the Macrostrat application programming interface is made which returns the economic and environmental data from the Macrostrat database. Then, I created a for-loop function that creates a page which displays a pair of pie charts of the economic and environmental factors of a user selected column. The pie charts show the percentage of the five largest (by percentage) economic and environmental factors, respectively. A column’s age range and thickness are also displayed. In addition, I added a second for-loop function, which updates the charts and cards if the user selects a new column.
